On
the day of its independence, 21
September 1981, Belize
applied for membership to the United Nations and in so doing declared its
acceptance of the obligations contained in the Charter of the United Nations
and solemnly undertook to fulfill them.
Upon
the recommendation of the Security Council, the General Assembly admitted Belize to
membership in the United Nations on 25
September 1981.
Since
its admission, Belize
has been represented on several UN Bodies:
Commission on the Status of Women, Commission on Sustainable
Development, Committee on Information, and the Economic and Social Council.
Belize is a member of the Alliance of Small Island Developing States (AOSIS), the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), the Central American Integration System (SICA), the Group of 77 and China (G-77), the Latin American and Caribbean Group (GRULAC), the Non Aligned Movement, and the Rio Group.
Belize remains fully committed to
the purposes and principles of the United Nations and maintains a foreign
policy that is consistent with the Charter.
